Ok, I just read an article about Obama's next big program and I am not in accordance with it. Read it here.
What bothers me is that he wants lenders to forgive mortgage payments to the unemployed. I can see that he wants to help people who don't have jobs, but what about those who do have jobs? They are going to pay taxes so that lenders can be subsidized by the government and the unemployed can ride free? Why don't I just buy a house with a mortgage and then quit my job? Then I will get to have a free house because I don't have a job and all those people who do have jobs can pay for me.
It seems ridiculous. Why is Obama sticking his nose into other people's business anyway? I don't know how I feel about Obama, but I do know how I feel about this idea he's got going right now. Why should I have to use the money I earn to pay for someone else to have a house? It seems very unconstitutional. Each man has the right to the pursuit of happiness on his own. That is what America was founded upon. The fact that each person could have the opportunity to make it on his own. The government doesn't need to put their foot into everything. "In God We Trust" not "In Obama We Trust."
I feel like the duties of the government are to keep order in the society, maintain a safe and secure environment, and protect our freedom. It's pretty simple. I'm ok with programs to help people, but not when I am forced to give my money away for unjust causes.
Points for feedback. I am open to different points of view. Don't be afraid to disagree, but do be kind when you state your opposing views.

I agree- I think one of the goals in his campaign is for every American to have a house.
Noooo- not every American deserves a house! People can live in apartments, learn to save their money (or not) and rent. Buying a house is the biggest and most important purchase a person will ever make. I'm with you- I don't want to pay that for them.
Shelly - I have been blog stalking you long enough! I'll give you some comment love.
Since the beginning of Americans becoming American, their dream has been to own land and be successful. I guess this dream has gone the way of Manifest Destiny. Which is too bad, since MD was not the best idea we had. Moving forward, people have become way too dependent on being "bailed out" and raised by parents who allow them to expect all the good things in life without having the money to pay for it.
People losing their house because of their poor choices is sad, but ok. It sucks for the economy, but at least half of them will learn their lesson and buy something affordable next time. OH - and not on an adjustable mortgage, because unless you only plan to live in that house for 6 months to a year, it's rarely a good option.
And no, I don't want to be paying for my brother-in-law's house, or anyone's for that matter, no matter how much they owe. I have enough bills people! :)
Good subject.
So.... I would like to tastefully disagree. While yes, this plan provides forebearance (forgiveness) to those who have lost their jobs for I think it's up to 6 months, we are not going to have to pay for it. "No taxpayers funds will be needed" it will be taken out of the "$50 billion previously allocated for forclosure relief."
Also, these funds are not just going to be given out to people who up and quit their job because they don't want to pay their mortgage for the next six months. Just like any federally funded assistance program, you have to meet many certain qualifications (something like 10% poverty level).
So, I know that everyone else has commented saying they wouldn't want to pay for other peoples houses, not even their families, but seriously think about it for a minute. What it your dad finds out tomorrow that he lost his job, and because of that, he can't afford to pay the mortgage this month, and because of that, the bank threatens to foreclose your home and ruin his credit which eliminates any possibility of him buying a home within the next 10 years.... and all he needed was $50 from everyone in your family to buy him the time to get a new job so he wouldn't foreclose. You really wouldn't give that to him??? Instead you'd say, "sorry dad, but it's your fault for being poor."
This is obviously extreme, and I'm sure that you'd give your dad the money, but I guess this is the point: Yes, there are people who are going to scrounge off of everyone else in every possible way, and we are going to have to foot the bill, and I don't like that either, but there are actually good, hardworking and honest people out there who have recently lost their jobs through no fault of their own and are really trying to find a job in this seriously tough job market, and may not be able to pay their mortgage for a few months. If that were me, or my family, or even someone that I didn't know... I would want them and their family to be able to keep their house for as long as possible; whether I had to give them a few bucks or not.
I'm in the middle on this one. What I REALLY want is a system that cna't be abused. I know it's unrealistic and unreachable, though, which causes me to just be cynical.
Like Yolanda said, if someone good, hardowkring, honest person loses their job through no fault of their own, you would want them to be helped.
Unfortunately I think I've grown pessimistic about the widespread existence of those people. I hear too many stories about people abusing the system so they don't have to work, or so they can have nicer things than they can pay for, and that my friends, is not right.
To me, the essence of American-ness is that if you want something, you can get it. BUt you don't get it by sitting around and saying, I'm poor, someone help me. You get it by working for it and earning it. So yes, everyone could have a home. If they were willing to pay for it. And yes, I believe that if someone needed help on their mortgage, and the reason they defaulted was by no fault of their own, they should receive that help. But I think there should be time limits, and strict qualifications to be met to receive that help, and if not, sorry. Find an apartment.
